Discussion:
MP3 not synced

I have no clue what is causing this. I have all my MP3's in one folder
and all of them get synced by ephpod (2.70a), but when i go to play this
particular mp3, my ipod (original 20gb) just skips right over it. The
file IS there on the ipod because i can play it out of the ipod's HDD
while its connected through my computer, but when trying to play it
through the ipod itself, it just skips to the next song. I did a "probe
for lost music" and "verify database", but song still gets skipped, both
in the playlist and in the browse sub directory.

I searched the archives but all i found was this
http://www.ephpod.com/listserver-archives/1692.html
And this

Both the answers in the two article in the archives could be correct,
but there's another - corrupt file.

Some encoded mp3s can sometimes not-quite fit the proper standard that
hardware-based devices need to play them back. Programs such as Winamp
can be a lot more forgiving when it comes to this, which may explain why
it plays on your computer but not on the iPod. The corruption could be
either in the transfer of the file, or in the file itself. So try the
following.

A) Delete the file off the iPod and copy it over manually without using
the sync function
or
B) Re-rip or get another copy of the particular track.

If you delete it off the iPod and transfer it back over, the should
resolve any iPod-not-finding-song issues, so I'm suspecting it's more
likely to be B. But fiddle around and give them both a try.

What happens if you press the Back button after it has skipped the song?
Does the iPod play the song then? It just skips the first song when you
manually pick a playlist/song? What firmware version are you using?
There used to be a bug in firmware versions 1.2 (1.1?) thru 1.2.5 which
caused this behaviour, due to a low hd spinup time or something like that.
I had 1.2.6 short time, but I think they fixed it there. And definitely it's
(mostly) fixed on 1.3.

Go to the archive and search for "skip songs" for some related posts.

Some things that may (or may not) help:

- Use folders F00 .. F19 on your iPod
- Let EphPod rename your files on the iPod to short names (i.e. don't
preserve filenames).
- Defrag the iPod.

When I press back, it goes back to the buggy song then skips right back
to the song after it.
It skips the same song when I browse into the artist/album as well as
when I load it from the playlist.
Preserve file names is off, defrag? I'll give that a shot.

If that doesn't work, then as Brendan suggested, it might be a corrupt
file. I tried deleting it off the iPod and manually syncing just that
song, but got the same effect.
This is a "rare" MP3 so no luck in getting another copy of this track,
so I guess trying to decompress into .WAV and recompress back into
192kbps MP3 might be in order. Any recommended programs?

Hmmmm, sounds like it's not the song-skipping problem then. As another
side note to the song-skipping issue, someone suggested keeping the
iPod's hard drive below 98% capacity, and I've also found this can help.

But yes, corrupt file it sounds like (nice Yoda-speak there). Is the MP3
ultra-ultra rare? You might have a chance of finding it floating around
on Shareaza if you're lucky, not that I'd ever suggest using that sort
of thing (*cough cough*).

As for doing the convert, that would probably work, although you will
lose quality. To convert it from MP3 to WAV, you can use something like
Winamp to do this without a problem - Winamp has a built-in Diskwriter
output plugin, which works a treat these days. You can find it in Winamp
2.x under Preferences > Output, then select the "Nullsoft Disk Writer"
plug in. You can click the configure button to tell it where you'd like
it stored on your hard drive.

To convert it back to MP3, you can use a proggy such as WinLame, which
is a front-end for the Lame MP3 codec.
http://winlame.sourceforge.net/download.php

But in this case, I'd actually suggest converting it to a high quality
AAC/MP4 file - that way, quality loss will be minimal, and you can have
a nice as-close-to-original-mp3 copy as possible. A lovely program to do
this is Ivan&Menno, which can convert your WAV file to an MP4 file.
You'll need to download the Psytel or FAAC encoder to use with it. The
two links are:

Ivan&Menno
http://home.wanadoo.nl/~w.speek/ivan&menno.htm

AAC encoders
http://rarewares.hydrogenaudio.org/aac.html

I recommend the Psytel AAC Encoder - about 2/3 down the page.

And that *should* be about it. If you need any further directions in
using it, just give me a yell off-list and I'll be happy to help.

Cheers

Yahoo! Re-encoding worked. Song synced and plays perfectly. I used
winamp to decompress and the winlame to recompress.
